HMS Dragon’s Lynx helicopter fires infra red flares during an exercise over the Type 45 destroyer.
As well as flying her own Lynx helicopter – of 815 Naval Air Squadron based in Yeovilton – Dragon has been flexing muscle as part of joint training with Typhoons from her affiliated 6 Squadron RAF.
Holding various flying exercises with 11 Squadron, based at RAF Conningsby, and Boeing E3-Ds from 8 Squadron based at RAF Waddington, Dragon also exchanged personnel for the RAF to experience life on a ship and vice versa.
A member of the BRF fires a .50cal Heavy Machine Gun during a night range package from a Jackal vehicle. The long exposure used by the photographer traces each round leaving the weapon.
Soldiers from 4 Mechanised BrigadeÕs Brigade Reconnaissance Force (4 Bde BRF) took part in Exercise Jordan Express. The exercise in the south of Jordan was based in the desert and was intended to prepare the BRF in readiness for a future deployment to Afghanistan.
Over 120 troops took part in the exercise which lasted approximately 4 weeks and involved various Mission Specific Training (MST) in readiness for their deployment in 2010. The arduous and demanding exercise involved several range packages, mines awareness training, physical training, reconnaissance training and signals training, as well as more conventional infantry training.
4 Bde are based in Catterick, North Yorkshire, and are due to replace 11 Bde in March/April 2010 for Herrick 12. This will be 4 BdeÕs first tour of Afghanistan, they will be lead by Brigade Commander Brigadier Richard Felton.

A Royal Air Force of Oman Jaguar, taxies towards the runway at Thumrait, Oman. The aircraft was taking part in Exercise Magic Carpet 2005.
The exercise was an opportunity for RN, RAF, Omani, French Air Force, USAF and USN squadrons to deploy and practice heavy-weapon bomb drops, utilising the extensive ranges and relatively clear airspace available over Oman. There were a variety of aircraft which took part, including our own Sea Harriers, GR7s and SKASaC, USN F18 and S3 Viking, USAF F16, French Mirage 2000 and RAF Tornado F3, Jaguar, VC10 air to air refuelling and E3D AWACS. In total around 60 aircraft were in theatre, allowing for realistic exercising of coalition forces. The participation of HMS Invincible with her Tailored Air Group (TAG) gave an excellent opportunity to prove the Strike Carrier concept within a controlled exercise environment and gain some useful general warfare training. It was a good opportunity for the ship’s company to progress training in an exercise environment.
